She Doesn’t Settle

Nov 13, 2019

Anyone who’s made a commitment to work on a goal, personal or professional, knows the difficulty of starting off toward your goal and maintaining that momentum day by day. But in the process of focusing on this early stage of change, we can overlook how challenging that final stretch can be, when the finish line is just in sight but you can’t even comprehend the idea of reaching it.

This finish line analogy is entirely appropriate because four months ago I made a commitment to run my first marathon, something I thought I’d never do at this point in my life. With the run just four weeks away, I’m having to follow my own advice and focus on the day-to-day process of becoming physically and mentally hardier rather psych myself out thinking of the looming final product.

For this episode, I’d like to emphasize the importance of staying mentally rooted in the moment and what you can accomplish right here and right now, rather than falling into the trap of thinking too forwardly and fretting over possibilities. I even explain how you can effectively trick your brain so it doesn’t overload you with these fears.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

- What convinced me to change my position on running a marathon on this stage of my life.

- My crash course lesson for new listeners on why our own minds can be the biggest obstacles as we close in on our goals.

- Ask yourself: why are you perfect for this goal right now?

- Why it’s necessary to stay focused on what we’re capable of in the present rather than what we may or may not be able to accomplish in the future.

- The reason data, rather than our own feelings, can give us a more accurate idea of the progress we’re making.

- Moving from a place of fear to a place of faith.

- The tool I’ve successfully relied on to overcome my fears and build confidence while preparing for athletic events.

Quotes:

“We have to constantly be paying attention to what’s happening in our brain.”

“We can focus on the struggle and judge ourselves or we can change our thinking and create a thought that will further our success.”

“All we have control over is today, what we do today, and how we show up.”

“Visualization goes a long way.”

“If we try, if we cross the finish line, we are further ahead than we would have been if we hadn’t started.”
